Backstage Volunteer Opportunities

Backstage volunteers must be available to attend at least 2 rehearsals during production week, dependent upon the roles and performance(s) for which you sign up to volunteer (unless other arrangements have been made in advance with the Backstage Manager).  A backstage packet, to include a backstage volunteer rehearsal schedule, will be emailed by the backstage manager 1 to 2 weeks before production week.  

 

Backstage with a group of performers

  • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
  • Arrive 45 minutes prior to the performance and stay until everyone in your group has been picked up
  • Ensure the safety of the dancers. All dancers should be supervised at all times

Backstage, not in charge of a specific group of performers

 

Runners

    • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
    • Assist the Backstage Manager and should be aware of the show order.
    • Must be quick thinkers and able to remain calm and work well under pressure with the Backstage Manager
    • Arrive 1 hour before the performance.
    • “Run” from the Backstage Manager to the backstage area and call the performers and their volunteers to come to stage.

 

Sign In/Out Volunteer

    • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
    • Sign students in upon arrival and out upon dismissal
    • Communicate to the parents who are dropping off students the estimated time of pick-up, that parents may not enter the backstage area for any reason, and that performers must be performance ready

 

Transport/Sign-In-Out Assistants

    • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
    • Assist the sign-in/out volunteer with whatever is needed
    • Retrieve performers during and at the end of the performance when parents arrive
    • Ferry performers to the bathroom or from room to room when necessary
    • Assist the upper door police in ensuring that anyone who is not signed up to volunteer does not go backstage.  

 

The Upper Door Police

    • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
    • Must be very adamant about not allowing parents, friends, or strangers to enter the backstage area from the lobby or through any other Niwot HS hallway entrances to backstage
    • This person must be able to handle confrontation.

 

Props Assistant

    • Specific responsibilities will be given to you after you have signed up for a specific backstage position
    • Assisting the Props Manager backstage
    • Set up props before the performances,
    • Know where all props should be placed and who each prop belongs to before and during the performances.  

 

Seamstresses

    • Must have excellent sewing skills
    • Does any emergency stitching to costumes while in the auditorium before, during, and after the show
    • In charge of organizing the schedules of all of the sewing room help volunteers
    • Ensure at least one volunteer is backstage for each performance
    • Be prepared with small flashlight, scissors, seam rippers, and pre-threaded needles of every color.

 

Sewing Room Assistants

    • Must have very good sewing skills
    • Make repairs to costumes before, during, and after the show.
